Family thicket

For years now, one of my favorite songs to sing Kepler with my ukulele has been "I'm my own grandpa." I like the fast-paced logic of it, the twisted premise, and the fact that, as a song about a multiply-interconnected family tree, it's often sung in inbred-bluegrass style.

It's an old song, written in 1948, and has been recorded by lots of different bands through the years.

Here's a good version of it:

And then today, while perusing the Independent, I found this article.

Here's the gist of it: "A 72-year-old man has agreed to donate his sperm to his son and daughter-in-law after the London couple were unable to conceive a child through IVF..."

So in an autoävuncular twist on the original theme, this kid is gonna have his half-brother acting as his dad, and his dad acting as his grandpa. And if he's his dad's brother, then he's necessarily his own uncle.

I wonder what he's gonna give himself for his 13th birthday?

And if his dad/brother and his mother later do manage to conceive, then his new half-brother will also be his nephew, etc etc. Just like the song, but with a single generation twist, rather then an generation-skipping one.

Either way, it's novelty fiction coming true. What's next? Old people bathing in tea?
