key to the vault

These are the keys to our house:

No kidding.

They're super big, and super heavy. And wrought, apparently, by hand. Several are quite elaborate examples of their species, and they're nearly all different. I've gone around the house with them, trying different keys in different places. Our house has no fewer than 7 external doors on, all with locking wooden shutters, plus a lot of lockable interior doors too. Anyone remember the formula for permutations? It's a lot of key-trying. But I did find a couple matches, leaving a slightly smaller handful of mystery keys and locks. Time may (or may not) tell what they're all for.

And speaking of mystery locks, look what we found:

It's been pulled away from the wall by about a foot. Looks like they realized how hard this thing is to move, and decided to leave it.

The is the medallion which had been pried off of its door, by an enthusiastic amateur safecracker, no doubt. The paint also shows signs of some attempted forcable entry.

There are no keys for this one.

I fully plan to find a safesmith, though, and to get this thing open, and to restore it to utility. It's too groovy, and unmovable, not to. I wonder if the makers are still in business?

Until that day arrives, though, we are left with the intrigue: what treasures lurk within its heavy fireproof walls? Does it contain documents, jewelry, nazi gold? Time will tell. Some objects don't give up their mysteries easily.
